ALTER Launches Heavy Gauge Wire Bonding Capability
With this new capability, ALTER can offer wire bonding up to 0.5mm in diameter, with current carrying capacity up to 35 Amps per wire, ideal for power electronics devices based on compound semiconductors.
Customer applications include renewable energy systems, electric vehicles (EVs), and industrial automation – all sectors critical to achieving net zero goals. Heavy gauge wires provide the necessary durability and conductivity for these demanding applications, ensuring efficient power management and thermal performance.
This capability is especially critical for high power applications where devices must handle substantial current and heat dissipation, as well as in compound semiconductors that are increasingly used in cutting-edge technologies like 5G infrastructure and advanced sensors.
Heavy wire bonding can be combined with ALTER’s automated assembly lines, including pressure-less silver sintered die attach, overmoulded plastic QFN, hermetic packaging, or chip-on-board module assembly. ALTER also offer electrical test and qualification for power devices and modules.
The new capability aligns with the broader industry trend of reshoring, as European customers seek to mitigate risks associated with global supply chains by bringing more of their manufacturing processes closer to home. This move not only enhances supply chain resilience but also reduces lead times and improves collaboration throughout the product development cycle.
By offering heavy gauge wire bonding locally, we’re providing our customers with a vital service that supports their goals of achieving higher reliability and efficiency in their products,” said Matt Booker, Commercial & Innovation Director at ALTER. We’re excited to see how this will help drive innovation in key areas like renewable energy, automotive, and industrial applications.
